Often touted as one of the best in Portugal, the Algarve‘s nightlife is vibrant and varied. After you’ve spent the day at the beach and sampled local cuisine for dinner, drinks with friends and partying beckon. From trendy places with lounge areas featuring plush sofas and scented candles to old-school discos straight out of the 90s that haven’t given up on techno or house anthems, PDV takes you dancing and celebrity spotting.
You’ll have to climb a lot of stairs to reach it, but it’s definitely worth it: Casa do Cerro is a trendy place to meet friends and warm up before going clubbing, usually frequented by a younger, hip crowd. Located on the top of a hill on one of the main roads into Albufeira, this Moroccan-inspired lounge bar that used to be a restaurant for many years couldn’t be more different from the usual nightlife hangouts in Albufeira. Casa do Cerro is two different places in one: a lounge area on the terrace and a chill-out room indoors. With its ethnic atmosphere and relaxing music, Casa do Cerro is the perfect place for a post-beach drink or to smoke shisha with your friends.
An old-school nightclub, Kiss is home to shouty DJs, popular music and hordes of sunburnt and wild tourists – think foam parties and the like. With two dance floors and two different playlists featuring chart toppers, Kiss has the advantage of being halfway between the Rua da Oura bars and the beach, in the centre of Albufeira. A stallwart of Algarve nightflife, the club was opened 20 years ago and remains very unpretentious, with an inclusive door policy.
The equation beach plus party is perfect for any tourist visiting the Algarve and looking for fun. In Portimão, the Meo Spot Summer Sessions bring hipster crowds to Rocha beach for celebrity DJ nights. With quality music and trendy parties, Meo Spot Summer Sessions are unmissable for those who love nightlife. Door policy is very strict – people often get turned away and there is a minimum drinks purchase required that changes with every party. The space only opens in July and August so it’s advisable to keep a close eye on the schedule.
An Albufeira nightlife classic and one of the trendiest places to be in the Algarve, Capítulo V is a nightclub across the road from Oura beach that is known for its classy choice of DJs and musicians. Recently refurbished, its trendy atmosphere, fashionable decor and young crowds make it an essential part of the region’s nightlife. Enjoy the wonderful deck right in front of the beach. One piece of advice: beware of prices!
Liberto’s is one of the most obvious Albufeira and Algarve nightlife destinations. A popular celebrity haunt favoured by Portuguese football players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Liberto’s is a bar located in the famous Rua da Oura, known for its more relaxed, cozy ambience with still enough room for those wanting to dance the night away. The decor is laid-back and reminiscent of the Far East: there are Indian and Buddhist icons everywhere. Liberto’s is a good starting point for a night out, even if the surrounding area can get a bit noisy and crowded as the night unfolds.
The Black Jack is a nightclub located in one of the most famous casinos in Portugal. Although it has seen better days, it continues to attract many people looking for the basics: house, techno and some pop chart toppers. If you like hanging out with football players who drop by in the summer, be it Cristiano Ronaldo or top athletes like Michael Phelps, this is the place to be. Among its main highlights are the foam parties famous in the area for their cheekiness, and the Ladies Night on Thursdays, which include free drinks for women, starting in July.
One of the survivors from the 90s, Kadoc still draws crowds. Located halfway between Albufeira and Vilamoura, Kadoc won’t disappoint tourists looking for foam parties, sounds ranging from techno to the latest hits depending on the room and loads of alcohol. Even if its prestige faded as the huge clubs built during the 1990s lost their appeal, Kadoc continues to be popular with those who like space, megalomaniac rooms and hardcore techno and current chart toppers.
Located in Quinta do Lago, one of the most luxurious developments in the Algarve, T-Clube is a longstanding member of the Algarvian nightlife that has managed to retain its aura of exclusivity over the years. Patrons know they will find a select crowd there. Home to Portuguese jet-setters in their forties and men who religiously abide by the shirt and deck shoes combo, T-Club is one of the best places to sample local nightlife without running the risk of coming face to face with highly intoxicated tourists. Enjoy the Japanese-inspired restaurant and the lounge terrace surrounded by palm trees.
Le Club, across Santa Eulália beach in Albufeira, is a place catering to those looking for something different from traditional hardcore clubs but still want to go out dancing in a more relaxed setting, away from overplayed chart toppers, preferring instead a more chill-out musical approach. It is definitely worth a stop. Its Italian restaurant also comes highly recommended.
Bliss offers summer parties with several famous DJs at Vilamoura’s equestrian centre, an open space with panoramic sea views over the beach. Organizers are providing an exclusive space for an exclusive crowd and choosing their DJs accordingly: electronic music heavyweight Steve Aoki is expected to perform here this year. Expect crowds plus several Portuguese celebrities and be prepared to wait in line for admission. But it really is worth it: the open-air space, handpicked DJs and musicians will groove you to the bones.
